Industrial degreaser for cycling? I bought a container of one gallon of Zep Industrial Degreaser twelve dollars. You water it down making it incredibly cheap and it works better than anything I've ever used. My question is would it be too strong? The first time I used it I did not wear gloves (I realize how stupid that was). I lost a layer or two of skin and could not feel my fingers for a week. I tested it on an old chain and without oil, it rusted overnight. Until I get all lubed up it does not seem to damage, but I wonder if it could weaken the metal. Ideas?
NO it will not weaken the metal.
What you have just been cleaned of all oils the chain so that flash rusting. The rusted steel water vapor in the air. The next time the oil when it dries. Better still, dry and lubricant, without waiting to dry.
Wear gloves with an industrial degreaser. The label warns you to wear gloves for a reason.

EDIT: If you have concerns about injuries that I recommend you use the phone. The link provided in the other answer is to Zep Professional. If you purchased the product at Home Depot Is Zep Commercial. If you have purchased a sales representative, he is directly Zep Sales and Service. They are different divisions and products. The MSDS evil is not good information.
It does not hurt metal, it just cheaned all the oil out of it. Go to their website and see the Personal Protective Sheet MS DS for the product. Most solvents like that, you should wear rubber, neoprene or nitrile.
