can lay new tile. The previous owners used some sort of self-leveling material with grout during the laying of tiles. What is the best way to remove it?
So far, we have tried:
Sanding - tons of dust
Correction - tons of dust
etching - super slow

Here are some pictures of what we are working with:

Any help would be greatly appreciated
I do not envy your situation! I suppose you have some options. I can not say if they put a bed of mud used backer board, but you can always bring it back to the sub-floor and start from scratch. If it is a bed of mud, you'll just have to break it and pull it out. If the backer that's probably more work than it's worth it because it can be nearly impossible to draw up depending on how they put it down. Whatever you're looking at a lot of work and mess.
Depending on the size of the job, you can always use a self-leveling out the ground or use a combination land backer board news to give you a good surface to apply the tile.
If your tile has been laid on a bed of mud, you can mix mud and repair of the surface (my wife and I have done on our bathroom when we replaced the tile). It was easier than we thougtht and saved a big mess and many hours of work. Good luck.
You do not mention what you have under-floor, but if you have a crawlspace under-wood floor and take a skill saw and cut 1 / 2 inches deep and about a square cut. Raise your underlayment plywood, mortar and all, and continue until it away. Then, you drop your mortar / concrete backerboard, etc. and go. If it is a concrete slab foundation, I have no suggestions other than what you already do .. .. Sorry. called a tile company and get them out of an estimate - can get good advice eliminating them, if nothing else!
