As to choose between dry, canned or semi-humid, you'll probably do very well what you say about them. Dry foods offer convenience and economy, but some dogs do not like them. Canned and semi-moist foods are very nice dog to the palace, but they are more expensive - and some sugars and dyes that are not at all necessary to feed your dog. Although pets prefer canned food, if you start your puppy dry food, you should not have a problem with the power capricious, which is a behavior that is usually taught by humans.
Dry foods help keep your dog's teeth clean, but if you brush and cleaned regularly, the teeth of your pet should be fine on the other diets.
If you're house training a puppy or dog, you may want to feed kibble, at least until the task is accomplished. The moisture content of canned foods can make a dog urinate more often. This consideration is especially important if your dog is left home alone for several hours at a time, like when you're at work.
If you prefer canned food, you can always change after the puppy a little older and able to "hold" longer, or your adult dog understands that house rules are.
My preference is to eat properly, premium kibble from a reputable manufacturer, and nothing else. By "appropriate", I mean puppy food for puppies, foods with less fat and protein for older dogs or overweight, and performance for very active dogs.
Why a premium kibble? It's a bit more expensive than some other dry foods, but still competitive compared to canned and semi-humid. Premium dry food also causes a decrease in stool volume than is produced by many other foods. These two concerns are not important if you have a chihuahua, but they can be if you have a Great Dane.
Ask your veterinarian or groomer other animal care professional - a trainer or breeder - for a recommendation, and stick to it once you're satisfied with what works for your dog and that the love. Dogs do not need variety, and they do not get bored with the same diet day after day. When a healthy dog is a picky eater, it is usually because the owners have taught him to be this way, adding TidBITS attempt at any sign of reluctance to eat.
