Cat WeeCat Litter Tray Problems - Urinating everywhere but the bin!

Many cat owners are faced with inappropriate urination in their home. A consistent problem is cats who urinate in the litter box, but never really in it.

Q: I have a 7 years OLF Himalayan half and half is white Persian. We have gained approx. 4-5 years ago. We have moved several times and she has adapted well. But since Hurricane Rita, a year ago and our entire floors throughout the house have been changed to hardwood. The cat urine and defacates all on the floor right next to her litter box. We had one electric and got rid of him, thinking she was afraid and we now have an open box one and she always uses the bathroom outside the box. We do not know what else to try.

A: Thanks for your question. It is quite a common problem that you have. Cats may have an aversion to litter boxes for a number of reasons. If it has been underway for a year then I agree that it now looks like a behavior problem, but there may be medical reasons contributing.

The changes in shape litter, depth and design can certainly put the cat out of the use, as any change in the kitty litter you use, and also where you put the tank. Cats are very unforgiving and rival elephants when it comes to memory and holding grudges. If it has been put off using the tray so it may take some time to encourage her back.

Medically, conditions such as cystitis can cause pain during urination blame it on the litter box, joint and muscle pain can also bring out that extra effort. Even if she had a recent medical visit, it would be interesting to let the vet review once you've explained the problem so they can exclude some of the common causes.

If the underlying cause has been and gone (ie, stress, environmental changes, etc.) then the next step is to get her back into the rhythm of the use of the litter. Make sure the litter tray is the same as the old (and not fear power) with the same scope. Consider adding a second litter box in a new place where she can get a little privacy.

Your veterinarian may be able to help others, I use a product called Feliway, which mimics the facial pheromones of cats (the ones they rub on your leg when they greet you!) This helps reduce stress and cats are generally feeling better about things. There is also the behavior of various disease-modifying drugs available, but I wouldnt achieve these words just didn't yet.You if she was allowed outside, then check if there is nothing there that could be upsetting her.

If all else fails, then there are many behavioral scientists out there who may be able to help, your veterinarian should be able to refer you to one.
