The best way to travel to Cooktown There are two routes to Cooktown south, one is the coastal road to Cape Tribulation via the four-wheel drive only Bloomfield track, and the inland road is sealed all the way through the Peninsula and Cooktown Routes development. If you have a vehicle with four wheels, you can do both (one north and one south). If not, the inland road is the best way bet.The road along the west side of the Cordillera and steadfastly maintains its outback character depending on the season you travel in. Its about a four and a half hours from Cairns Cooktown and the road passes through rugged dirt cattle and puts on two lines.
Mount Molloy is the beginning of Route Peninsula development., This city has reduced in size, much as gold and days of mining Cooper, and now consists of a pub, barley, the post office and a cafe. In the cemetery, you will find the Irish prospector James Venture Mulligan, who was the first to find gold in rivers Palmer and Hodgkinson. Mulligan then purchased the town bar, where he died of injuries he suffered after braking a bar brawl.
Just a short drive outside the city, you encounter Abattoir Swamp environment. Although the name does not sound pleasant, it is a wetland that is covered with beautiful lotus flowers and popular with bird watchers and campers. Mount Carbine, is about 30 km northwest of Mt Molloy. If you want to relax, you can stay at the Hotel Mont rifle. This hotel is famous for an old Brahmin bull, who frequented the bar to drink beer. Mount Carbine Village and Caravan Park, just south of the pub, a self contained cabins, a large swimming pool and playground.

The road continues north to reach the Palmer River, and then after another 15 km you arrive in Lakeland. Lakeland is in the fertile volcanic basin of the valley of Laura. It produces grain, cereals, sugar and coffee house serves the Lakeland coffee.The fabulous Laura Valley Coffee and snacks more, you can fill your car too.
Thirty miles from Lakeland is the Annan River Gorge with a natural swimming hole and waterfall. The last landmark on the road to Cooktown is the beautiful Black Mountain National Park. It has thousands of stacked, square blocks of black granite which were formed 260 million years by the intrusion of magma below the surface. From there, you have about another thirty miles and you arrive in Cooktown.
